Back to the Future: Are We Getting It Right This Time? Large excess capacities and inventories available during the last two decades have discouraged investment by producers. Until recently, buyers were comfortable with supply availability and the resulting low market prices. However, the market has changed, with excess production capacity largely eliminated and the seemingly never-ending sources of inventory dramatically reduced. Market perception has changed with buyers now very concerned about future supply availability, particularly concerning natural uranium. As a result, prices have risen significantly and some analysts project large additional increases. The nuclear fuel industry has seen this kind of shift in market perceptions and prices in the past, only to see a reversal not too long after.
