Investment and Inventory-What’s “In”?

For more than a decade nuclear fuel suppliers have faced a combination of excess capacity and a seemingly endless availability of inventories. As a result there has been little incentive to invest in new production capacity. Recently excess production capacity has been eliminated as sources of supply have consolidated and older, higher priced contracts no longer insulate some suppliers. In addition inventories are being rapidly reduced. For example, the equivalent of more than 600 million pounds of natural uranium inventory, in various forms, has been drawn down in the last decade. In order to assure needed supplies for future reactor requirements in the medium and long-term, new investment is required now. The consumption of inventory also is affecting the way the industry operates; lead times for processing are increasing and flexibilities are decreasing. Buyers need secure supply at reasonable prices and suppliers need adequate returns on their investments. This meeting will address how these needs can be achieved - when new supply will be needed, what it takes to generate the investment required to have a stable, assured supply, and how changes in inventory availability and management will influence investment decisions.
